Houston County
Habitat for Humanity
became an affiliate of
Habitat for Humanity International on October 1, 1991. Habitat for Humanity is a
non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry the builds decent
affordable homes for low income families who are living in
sub-standard housing today. Our affiliate works only in Houston
County Georgia.
Habitat for
Humanity was established by Millard and Linda Fuller in
1976. Since that time, it has expanded into every state in the
union. As of April 1, 2005, there were 1699 affiliates in the United
States. There are 86 affiliates in the state of Georgia. Habitat is
also in 103 foreign countries and has five regional offices
scattered around the world. Many people are under the impression
that Jimmy Carter is the President of Habitat. This is not true;
however, every year since 1984, President Carter has participated in
a Jimmy Carter work project. Each year he lends his name to a
project and he donates one week of his time to the project.
We have a Family Selection Committee
that selects the families for home ownership. We also have a Family
Support Committee that is responsible for helping the families to
become successful homeowners. Becoming a homeowner represents a big
step for a family who has never owned a house before. We are
fortunate in that we have had several houses sponsored by area
churches. All of the other houses have been constructed with
recycled mortgage money and with contributions from supporters.
Our
Accomplishments
During the 15+ years that we've been
a Habitat affiliate, we have built 10 houses in the Perry area, 27
in Warner Robins; and 1 in Haynesville, for a total of 38 houses.
Thirty-eight families have been able to
move from sub-standard housing into decent, affordable and safe housing.
We hold the mortgages and escrow the taxes and insurance on the houses.
The mortgage money is recycled to finance the construction of new
houses.
This affiliate has a full time
Executive Director and a part-time bookkeeper. We do everything we can
with volunteer help. We really appreciate your interest in Habitat and you
can be certain that any contribution that you make will help us to advance
our mission.
Our Mission
Habitat for
Humanity
works in
partnership with God and people everywhere from all walks of life,
to develop communities with God's people in need by building and
renovating houses so that there are decent houses in decent
communities in which every person can experience God's love and can
live and grow into all that God intends.

What
We Do
- Select a family based upon need, ability to pay, and
willingness to partner with Habitat.
- Each family must contribute 500 hours of "sweat equity".
- Construct a home for the family.
- Use volunteer labor for as many tasks as possible.
- Sell the house to the family at no profit.
- Finance the house over a 15-25 year period with a no-interest
mortgage.
- Nurture and support the family throughout the selection,
construction, and early ownership phases to address the needs of
the family relative to them becoming homeowners.
